Dear Atlanta Theatre Leader,

Our community is experiencing a reckoning. The global effects of the pandemic, and now the civil unrest in our communities, are highlighting the disparities between white lives and the lives of People of Color- especially Black people. A seismic shifting of the status quo is threatening to rock the foundation upon which so many theaters in this community have built their legacies. When we are able to make theatre again, we cannot return to “business as usual.” We cannot return to theatre companies that will not acknowledge and respect the voices of the BIPOC community. In an effort to make sure those voices are heard, The Coalition for Racial Equity in Atlanta Theater (CREAT) and Inclusion Diversity Equity in the Arts Atlanta (IDEA ATL)  have partnered to host a three-night virtual town hall:

June 29th, 6 pm to 9 pm Town Hall for Racial Reckoning

June 30th, 6 pm to 9 pm Town Hall for Racial Reckoning

July 1st, 6 pm to 9 pm Night of Healing for BIPOC Theatre Makers Only

Theaters have been randomly assigned to one of the two Town Hall Nights. List of theaters and more information can be found HERE.

It is our sincere hope that your theater will participate in this town hall by attending along with your senior staff and board members and listening to the myriad stories of BIPOC artists. Those who desire to, will share directly or anonymously, their experiences working in Atlanta theaters. The voices you will hear, and the stories that will be shared, should paint a clear picture of the necessary work ahead. This work will require many of our theaters to dismantle the white supremacist culture and structures that prevent Black people and people of color from feeling welcomed and supported.

Won’t you join us in this endeavor toward a more equitable arts community?
